ADHD and Impulsivity

Firstly I will apologise if there are grammar or spelling errors in any of my blog posts. One thing that I didn’t realise was an ADHD trait was to make a lot of mistakes in written work. I have an A level in English language so I know I have a good understanding of how things should be written, the careless mistakes come from submitting/posting/handing in work before thoroughly checking it over. Thankfully Word has a spelling and grammar checker and I’ve really tried with these posts, so hopefully they’re not too bad! I know full well I should take more time and care with things but this apparently just doesn’t give me the quick dopamine hit that my brain needs in order to get through life. Thus things get submitted on impulse and often don’t make sense. My friends in various online chat groups will vouch for my inability to spell words correctly in haste of getting the message up quickly!

So…impulsivity…the amount of ridiculously embarrassing things I have done on a whim would fill a book so I won’t go into too much detail, but a few examples include me jumping on a golf buggy whilst it was moving (resulting in me rolling off onto the road and gathering a fair few bruises), pushing past people on various occasions, not realising they were in a queue (I can’t stand still, queues are a nightmare for me) and barging into conversations with out ‘reading the room’ first only to realise what I had said or done was totally inappropriate.

I also buy things impulsively and have started so many courses that haven’t really gone anywhere, not thinking through the long game properly, just focussing on what I need or want to do in that very minute. My ability to save money is near zero on a scale of 1-10. I seem very much so to think in the now and not the future. This often results in me buying something with my overdraft and spending the next month paying it off. I’m very lucky to have a husband who is very much the opposite and is always a voice of reason for me when I have crazy ideas of things I want to buy or do. For example this year he thankfully stopped me from buying about 10 cats that I couldn’t afford, some chickens for the garden that I definitely would have never cleaned out, a van that we have no room for and various other things that despite me feeling like I needed 100% at the time, I have not thought about needing them since (apart from may be the cats, you can never have too many cats) and am glad we didn’t purchase!
