My Art Creation Processes

My art is varied using lots of different mediums so today I will start with my hand drawn illustrations. Most of my art starts as a funny thought in my head or observations I’ve made in my day to day life. The black ink robots are no different. I try not to take life too seriously (as let’s face it, it’s one massive joke right?) hence using silly robots to portray the messages rather than sensible people.

At present I use Derwent Academy sketching pencils. I’ve had these since I started drawing and they have always worked for me. I’d say they are middle of the range pencils, reasonably priced as well and the lead very rarely snaps (and I drop mine A LOT!). I usually sketch out the drawing first in my drawing pad (also nothing expensive here as it’s for rough sketches).

Once I have done this and am happy with the idea I then sketch it out on white card (255gsm works for me for a good quality final piece). I’ll then go over the lines with black ink for the layout. My favourite pens to do this with are Faber-Castell PITT artist pens and unipin FINE LINE. The nibs are great on both and don’t wear out too quickly.

Once I have drawn the outline I’ll begin putting finer detail in and shading. I tend to use cross hatch shading on these designs and I’m not going to lie, it takes FOR AGES! Drawing lots of tiny lines over and over. Also very therapeutic though. Once I have finished I spray with a fixative and put somewhere safe for scanning and editing prints.
